Pisa, Tuscany in June: The city is lit by a thousand candles

Tuscany in June
Piestrasanta is one of Italy’s undiscovered secrets; adored by the Italians but over looked by foreign tourists – it’s a wonderful medieval town that was once home to great artists like Michelangelo and more recent famous faces like Giorgio Armani and Roman Abromavich.
On the 16th of June, on the eve of the celebration of its patron Saint an array of candles are lit and adorn the River Arno for Pisa’s Luminaria di San Ranieri. The thousands of candles on the bridges, river banks, and ancient buildings give a stunning spectacle of light; combined with the array of colours and flashes off the fireworks as they explode into the pitch black sky. It’s an experience that you have to be part of to really feel the 17th century tradition.
Bridgewater’s idyllic specialises in accommodation on Tuscany’s golden coast – less than a 30 minute drive from Pisa. The great thing about Pisa is, you don’t have to drive as there are regular trains for Pisa to Piestranta old town; meaning you can really enjoy the magical celebrations with a glass or two of vino immersed in the café life that spills out on to the square.
Piestrasanta is a holiday destination for those who like to immerse themselves in the authentic Italian culture.
